Radon

Radon

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas produced from the radioactive decay of uranium rocks and soil. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless. Health Canada sets an acceptable annual rate is (200Bq/m3) 200 becquerels per cubic metre . Levels have reached as high as 4,000 Bq/m3 in Calgary homes.
One in five (homes) are over the maximum acceptable limit. That’s quite high and very surprising,” said Aaron Goodarzi, an assistant professor at U of C’s Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute. Calgary’s early results are even more concerning if measured against US guidelines and those issued by the World Health Organization, which are more stringent.
To put your mind at ease I would suggest having your house tested. The most accurate way of testing your home is with a 3 month test kit. It is simple and inexpensive.
